5 Weird Foods That Help You Lose Weight and Live Longer

I came across this video interview with nutrition expert and author of SuperLife Darin Olien, discussing his top 5 favorite superfoods. Darin has been studying health and nutrition for over 25 years, and I always enjoy learning from him. In this interview, Darin talks about 5 crazy foods that reduce weight and increase lifespan. I hope you enjoy these. Most of these foods you have probably never heard of… or have you?

The foods Darin is referring to are called Adaptogens and have been used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times to help the body adapt and respond to the effects of stress. Centuries of traditional medicine have believed adaptogens help support physical and mental wellbeing. They are so important for the body because they are so widely used by the body for everything from repair to performance to inflammation reduction to stress reduction and longevity.*

Weird Food #1: Ashwaghanda

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb that is extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional health care system in India. Ashwagandha is used as a general tonic and “adaptogen”, helping the body adapt to stress. In addition, Ashwagandha has been shown to support a healthy immune system.

Weird Food #2: Astragalus

For more than 2000 years, Chinese herbalists have valued Astragalus for its adaptogenic properties, as well as for its ability to tonify the body’s “vital force” known as the Qi. More recently, Astragalus has been found to support healthy immune function through numerous mechanisms. Non-clinical studies using Astragalus have demonstrated its ability to stimulate the production of and increase the activity of specialized white blood cells, such as T-Cells and Natural Killer Cells. Astragalus has also been studied for its role in the support of healthy liver and vascular function. Herbalists recommend the use of Astragalus both seasonally and year-round to support a healthy immune system.*

Weird Food #3: Maca

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is grown at high elevations in the Andes region of central Peru. It has been traditionally used for centuries as a food source and as a general energy tonic. More recent scientific data suggest that “gelatinize” Maca may help to support healthy sexual activity and fertility for men.*

The Reishi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, was revered in Chinese culture thousands of years ago. Known as the “elixir of life,” reishi mushrooms were believed to enhance memory and bring happiness, good health, longevity and a good future. It wasn’t until the 1970s that resihi mushrooms began to be commercially cultivated in Japan and scientifically tested for their health-promoting properties. Reishi:

  • Supports healthy function of human immune cells.*
  • Promotes healthy function of T-cells.*
  • Supports the immune system’s maintenance of healthy DNA replication.*
  • Has antioxidant activity.*
  • Supports the healthy function of the male lower urinary tract.*

Weird Food #5: Maitake

The Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is literally translated in Japanese to dancing mushroom. It is highly regarded in Asia for its culinary and medicinal qualities. Mushrooms have active components known as polysaccharides which have become the subject of much research as to their effect on good health.*

Weird Food Honorable Mention: Moringa

Moringa oleifera is native to the Himalayan mountain region of northern India but cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions throughout the world today. All parts of the tree—from its roots to its leaves—have been used either as food or for household purposes by people in many cultures throughout history.

The leaves are recognized as a good source of nutrition and can be eaten raw in salad or cooked in soups, vegetable dishes and more. Moringa has 8 times more vitamin C than oranges, and it has over 60 antioxidants.
